Dear
Belinda,
I hope you and Mike had a good summer. I know he was doing some Appalachian music at a concert in Georgia recently and I'm sure he had a good turnout!
Since you seem to enjoy following my hiking adventures (as short as they are -- Ha! ha!), heres some pictures of a rather different hike compared to Grandma Gatewood's and your territory. I was at the Sand Dunes in Indiana with my friend Tracy. These are pictures of Mt. Baldy. Though hiking through the Appalachian Mountains isnt exactly a walk in the park, I'm here to tell you that hiking on a sand mountain isnt a walk on the beach!
First we hiked though the woods on a relatively stable path that climbed upward toward part of the sand mountain. It was shady and pretty, but full of mosquitoes! Then we hit the side of Mt. Baldy -- its a good thing they don't let you climb all the way to the top anymore as going up a slippery sand side is quite tricky even with the rope "banisters" they had installed. The sand shifts and slides under your feet and makes going up or down a real balancing act. We went up a ways and then down to the beach where the views of Lake Michigan were definitely equal to views anywhere -- including this driftwood tree.
We took our shoes off and enjoyed the sandy beach and water for awhile then climbed back up the mountain to get back to the car. It was a good work out, Ill tell you.
I think you and Mike definitely have to find some time to come farther west and see some of the great places in the rest of the country!/font>
Enjoy the fall foliage wherever you go.
Always,
Bette Lou
