Lewis Clarke was born in March, 1815. He escaped to Canada in 1841
traveling through Ohio. His life provided the model for the character
of George Harris in Uncle Tom's Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe.
Lewis settled in Oberlin, Ohio around 1873 where he died in 1897.
