Assistant Engineers
(First, Second, and Third) were responsible for standing watches. On
a three watch system, it was four hours on and eight hours off watch.
The Assistant Engineers stood their respective watches at the throttle
panel, monitoring all Engine Room machinery. If orders came down via
chadburn or phone from the Pilot
House, it was up to the Watch Engineer to make the appropriate response
and adjustment to the engines. Each Watch Engineer also had a particular
system he oversaw. The First Assistant Engineer took care of the engine,
while the Second Assistant Engineer watched the boilers, and the Third
Assistant Engineer watched the lube oil system.
