Coal Passers
The Coal Passer (until 1953) was the entry level position in the Engine Department and was the Fireman's assistant. Both the Coal Passer and Fireman maintained the fires, which generated the steam pressure in the boilers. It was a hot dirty job, which earned them the sobriquet "black gang" because of their constant exposure to coal dust.
