On flagships or
any ship that carried guests, the Guest Porter saw to the needs of any
guests. This was a summer position since guests were carried June through
September. The Guest Porter would meet the guests as they approached
the vessel, make arrangements for their baggage to be taken aboard,
show them to their quarters, and make them aware of all safety practices.
During the trip the Guest Porter made beds, cleaned rooms, prepared
the Guests' Dining Room, and served the guests. He arranged for tours
of the ship and the port while the ship was being loaded. This job was
quite involved and required more than 8 hours a day, so he bunked forward
with the deckhands to be as close to the Guests' Quarters as possible.
Guest Porters were usually tipped at the end of a trip.
