Night Cook

Before 1954 in the days of longer working hours (12 hours daily), some boats would carry a Night Cook to cook for the sailors who came off watch at times other than the usual meal times. When shorter workdays (8 hours) became the norm, Night Cooks were replaced with the night lunch locker and access to a stove. On the Mather, the original Second Cook/Porter's room was opened up to become the crew's night lunch area. The area contained a refrigerator/freezer, range, sink, dishwasher, pots and pans, dishes, silverware, toaster, coffee maker, and a supply of dry foods. Anyone could come in to fix a snack in this area. Leftovers were stored here so that the crew could have them at any time they wished.
