Oilers assisted
the Engineers. There was one oiler per watch. He made rounds of the
Engine Room to check water levels, pressures, and monitor for overheating
of bearings, etc. Using oil cans with various grades of lubricants,
he would directly oil some parts of the engine and pumps and check and
fill other oil reservoirs that automatically oiled internal parts. The
Oiler might engage in simple maintenance of the auxiliary machinery
and was responsible for the pumping of ballast and boiler #3 (the coffee
pot). He was also responsible for whatever else might be ordered by
the assistant engineer or chief engineer.
