William G. Mather Family Chronology


1635: Richard Mather, Puritan minister, immigrates to Boston.

1639-1723: Increase Mather (son of Richard), also a Puritan minister. Cotton Mather (son of Increase), author of 440 books.

1628-1684: Timothy Mather (Increase's brother), direct ancestor of William G. Mather

1798: Samuel Mather (1745-1809) arrives in Cleveland to oversee land in Western Reserve, then returns to Connecticut.

1843: Samuel Livingston Mather (1817-1890, grandson of Samuel) arrives in Cleveland to oversee grandfather's land.

1849: Samuel L. Mather becomes shareholder in Cleveland Mining Company, mining iron ore on the Marquette Range, 12 miles SW of Marquette, MI.

1857: William Gwinn Mather born September 22 (son of Samuel L. Mather).

1872: Cleveland Mining Company builds its first Great Lakes vessels.

1877: William G. Mather receives BA from Trinity College, Hartford, Connecticut.

1878: William G. Mather begins working for his father as a clerk and moves up to ore salesman.

1885: William G. Mather receives MA from Trinity College.

1890: William G. Mather takes over as president of Cleveland Mining Company, completes merger negotiations with the Marquette Range and Iron Cliffs to form Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Company.

1905: First Steamship William G. Mather built (now Nicolet).

1907: William G. Mather moves from Euclid Avenue home to Bratenahl; builds Gwinn mansion.

1925: Construction of present William G. Mather.

1929: William G. Mather marries Elizabeth Ring Ireland, age 38; Mr. Mather was 71.

1933: Mr. Mather resigns as president and becomes Chairman of the Board of Cleveland-Cliffs.

1947: William G. Mather resigns as chairman.

1951: William G. Mather dies on April 5 at the age of 93.
