Chief Engineers
Chief Engineer: "The Chief" is in command of the engineering section. Although he was never in command of the whole ship, his rank and status were equal to that of the captain. His authority was limited to the propulsion machinery and electrical equipment, but within this framework, even the captain would defer to his judgment. The Chief did not stand a watch, but he was available during certain hours in his office, was close at hand during maneuvering, and always on call in case of emergency. The 1954 repowering dramatically changed the Engine Room's configuration and equipment, but did not appreciably change the "Chief's" job.
