Lost Restaurants Of Downtown Cleveland

An e-mail from Judy on August 10, 2018

I remember going downtown with my mother to shop. We would take the rapid transit from Bedford to the terminal tower and enter Higbee's in the basement. Then we would shop around looking for potential Christmas presents. My mother was dressed in heels and gloves and usually wore a hat. At lunch, I would beg her to take me to Mills Cafeteria on Euclid Avenue. I thought seeing all the food choices was the most exciting thing possible. Carrying my own tray at 10 or 11 was exciting and grown up feeling.

I remember when our kids were growing up, the day after Thanksgiving was traditional to go to Cleveland and go shopping and see the decorations in the Higbee's windows. We even took three exchange students with us over the years to experience this magical day. Our kids always wanted to go to the Silver Grill in
Higbee's--a very Art Deco place with live fish. They got their meals in cardboard decorated boxes that looked something like stoves. Then they got to go to the Twigbee shop for Christmas shopping "in private" away from prying eyes. Closing Higbee's was the end of a long family tradition of shopping and going for lunch.
